Chapter 15: Amori's Dorm Room Part 4: End
“ Phew… “
Randell set aside the utensils and the empty cupped meals to the side for Mhyv to consume, leaning against the bed frame and letting his eyes drift toward Amori's side of the room.
There's a lot going on in his head, specifically finding a part-time job.
He needs a guaranteed income soon, one that can sustain him throughout his three years studying in this academy, if he manages to pass.
So by watching Amori doing his own thing by the desk, he decided to ask him if he knew a good place to earn money.
“ Hey ugh…
You’ve been in this town longer than I have right? Do you have any recommendations where I could find a part-time job? “
“ Oh you don't need to do that.
Once you passed the Entrance Test and become a student, you'll earn money by taking Quest Hours “
“ Quest Hours? “ Randell paused.
“ Yup, think of it as some sort of night shift.
The academy assigns two groups to patrol the forest at night during specific days.
If monsters are detected near the settlement, kill if it's manageable or fall back to town and report to upperclassmen if it isn't “
“ Isn't that dangerous! “
“ Well it is if you're stupid.
But for 1st years like you, they don't engage with monsters directly. Their role is strictly patrol and report.
If they spot something, they flag it to the 2nd or 3rd year, and then you wait for further instruction. That's it."
" Still….
Why at night specifically? “
“ It's a common habit for monsters to gather at beastkin settlement at night since it's the time where we fall asleep, thus in their minds, it makes us vulnerable.
Even if we place Monster Barrier's around settlements like this town, they're still stubborn enough to try to slam into them. So the academy thinks that this is a good opportunity for us to learn about how to combat and kill monsters.
And as for how common monsters are in the forest, there is an open labyrinth deep within the forest, so many monsters use that place to migrate here at the surface. “
“ Wait an open labyrinth.
Why isn't it sealed yet? “
“ It's a common feature in Monster Academies, The staff use them as testing grounds."
" Testing grou-
For Mid-terms!? “
" Bingo “
"S-so you mean to tell me, we go inside an open labyrinth, as an exam!? ”
“ Don't worry we’ll be sorted randomly into 4 groups and have safety nets that teleports you to the infirmary, though using that safety net means an automatic fail… but as long as you're not stupid you’ll be fine. “
‘ What the heck!? ‘
Randell is having second thoughts as to why he chose to enroll at a Monster Academy.
Which after some time thinking he did reluctantly accept it, since he already decided to enroll in this place to graduate to be a licensed sorcerer in the first place.
If the students in this academy manage to be fine without a scratch, surely he can be too if he's careful.
His mind slowly shifts at Quest Hours and thinks about how much money they earn from taking it.
" A-about the Quest Hours…
How much does it actually pay? “
" Depends on which group you'll end up in.
Which are Atlen and Betsive.
Again, these groups will shift into specific days so you have to remember there schedule once you've enrolled.
Atlen operates on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday nights.
Betsive operates on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday nights.
Each group also splits into Early Night Groups, which operates at 8:00 P.M - 12:00 A.M. and Late Night Groups which operate at 1:00 A.M. - 5:59 A.M.
Once the shifts are over the money will be transferred in their bank account. “
" And the pay? "
“ Well, Atlen earns about 140-160 dollars while Betsive earns 120-130 dollars, with the amount depends on each individual performance. "
" Wait wait wait… Per shift? “
" Yeah Per shift… "
‘ Damn! Students here earned that much money!?
I need to ask my dad about my bank account. ‘
The math moved fast and it moved favorably. Randell felt something loosen in his chest that had been knotted there since the convenience store.
The forest, the labyrinth, the monsters, all of it was still there, technically.
But somewhere between a hundred forty and a hundred sixty, his concern had quietly packed its bags and moved to a smaller room in the back of his head.
He wanted to pass the Entrance Test before.
Now he needed to.
